Instagram API pricing 2026: what Meta charges, and what you pay for
Meta charges nothing to call the Instagram API: DMs, private replies to comments and publishing included. What you pay for is the tool on top, or the work of getting your own app approved.
The short answer
The Instagram API is free to use. Meta's developer docs say "The Messenger Platform is free to use", and that platform covers Instagram DMs; we found no per-call fee, per-message fee or paid tier on Meta's Instagram pages on November 6, 2026. To use it yourself you need a Meta app, App Review and Business Verification for accounts you do not own. WhatsApp is different: Meta bills it per message. Tools like Postkey sit on the official API and charge for the product, not for Meta's access; Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool.
Facts as of November 6, 2026
What Meta charges
Nothing, for Instagram. Meta's Messenger Platform overview, which covers Instagram professional accounts, says: "The Messenger Platform is free to use." The Instagram Platform overview and the Instagram messaging API pages name no fee, charge or cost.
That covers sending and receiving DMs, private replies to comments, reading comments and publishing posts. We found no Meta page that sells a paid Instagram API tier.

What it takes to use it yourself
Access is the cost. Standard Access works for "accounts you own or manage". To serve anyone else, Advanced Access "requires App Review and Business Verification", and "Your app must complete Meta App Review to be granted Advanced Access."
DMs need a messaging permission: instagram_business_manage_messages with Instagram Login, or instagram_manage_messages (with pages_show_list and pages_read_engagement) with Facebook Login.
Then the build: webhooks for comments and messages, token refresh, the messaging window and the rate limits below.
The limits that come with it
| What | Limit, in Meta's words |
|---|---|
| Calls a day | Calls within 24 hours = 4800 * Number of Impressions |
| Private replies to comments | 750 calls per hour per Instagram professional account |
| Send API, text and links | 100 calls per second |
| Send API, audio or video | 10 calls per second |
| Conversations API | 2 calls per second |
| Messaging window | For most user actions, it lasts 24 hours (up to 7 days after a click-to-Direct ad) |
| Human agent replies | within 7 days of a user's message, with the human_agent tag |
| Published posts | 100 API-published posts within a 24-hour moving period (the same page also says 50 in its carousel section) |
Meta's own pages disagree on the publishing limit; check the content publishing page before you rely on either number.

Where Meta does charge
WhatsApp. "Meta charges on a per-message basis... only for messages from businesses to users." Marketing, utility, authentication, service and Meta Business Agent messages are charged categories. Service messages have a free tier of 1,000 a month per business phone number.
Marketing Messages, Meta's promotional DMs on Messenger and Instagram, are "a new, optional premium feature that we intend to charge for in the future", free for now with no price published.
Meta's Business Agent came to Instagram in June 2026: "getting started is free. In the coming months, businesses will access the agent through paid subscription offerings." Meta One business bundles start at $14.99 a month.

Build it or use a tool
Building on the API costs nothing in fees and a lot in time: App Review and Business Verification before you can serve other accounts, then webhooks, tokens, the window and the limits, kept up to date as Meta changes them.
A tool has done that once for everyone. Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool: comment to DM, the follow gate and email capture on Instagram, Messenger and X, a scheduler for 21 networks, and an MCP server and REST API so your AI assistant or your code can build on it without a Meta app of your own.
Questions
Is the Instagram API free?
Yes. Meta's docs say "The Messenger Platform is free to use", and we found no fee on its Instagram API pages on November 6, 2026. Access to accounts you do not own needs App Review and Business Verification.
Does Meta charge per Instagram DM?
No. WhatsApp is the Meta channel billed per message. Marketing Messages on Instagram are free for now, and Meta says it intends to charge for them in the future.
Why do Instagram DM tools cost money if the API is free?
They charge for the product: the automation builder, the inbox, hosting, the work of keeping up with Meta's rules, and for some, a scheduler and an AI agent connection.
How can I use the Instagram API without App Review?
Use a tool that already has it. Postkey connects through Meta's official API and gives you an MCP server and REST API on top, so you or your AI assistant can build DM automations without your own Meta app. It has a free plan.
