Agentic DM automation

What is agentic DM automation?

Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool: your AI agent builds the automations, answers the DMs and schedules the posts, and waits for your yes.

The short answer

Agentic DM automation is Instagram and Messenger DM automation that an AI agent runs for you. Instead of you clicking through a flow builder, an assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude connects to the DM tool through an MCP server and does the work: it builds comment-to-DM and keyword automations, switches them on, reads and answers the inbox, and schedules the posts that bring the comments in. It all goes through Meta's official API, and a good tool makes the agent wait for your yes before anything reaches real people.

Agentic does not replace the other two. The agent builds rules and switches on AI replies for you, so the DMs still follow steps you can read.

How to tell if a DM tool is agentic

An AI connector alone is not enough. Ask these of any tool:

  • Does it have an MCP server your assistant can add, with a sign-in rather than your password?
  • Can the agent create and switch on automations, or only trigger and pause ones you built by hand?
  • Can it read the inbox and answer DMs?
  • Can it schedule the post and its comment keyword in the same connection?
  • Does one connection reach every account on your plan?
  • Do sends, replies and switch-ons wait for your yes by default?
  • Does it use Meta's official API, not a login with your cookies or password?
  • Is text from DMs kept from giving the agent orders?

What it looks like

You ask in plain words. The agent calls the tool, and shows you what it will do before it does it.

  • Set up an automation: anyone who comments GUIDE under my next reel gets my guide link by DM.
  • Only send the link to people who follow me, and ask everyone else to follow first.
  • Which DMs are still unread? Draft replies to the shipping questions.
  • Write a caption for Friday's drop, use the video from my library, and schedule it for 9am on Instagram and TikTok.
  • How did my posts do this month, and which automation got the most link taps?
  • Find @afan in my contacts and tag them VIP.

Why Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool

Postkey's MCP server can build, edit and switch on automations. An agent can do the whole job:

  • Build, edit and switch on DM automations: comment to DM, keyword DMs, follow to unlock, collecting emails.
  • Read the inbox, draft replies and send them once you say yes.
  • Write, schedule and publish posts, and set the DM keyword each post's comments reply to.
  • Find and tag contacts, and report how posts and automations did.
  • Up to 52 tools in one MCP server, with OAuth sign-in or an agent key, and a skill file that teaches the agent the rules.
  • Approvals, limits and protection from instructions hidden in DMs built in, so you can let an agent run it.

You stay in charge

  • It acts as you, on the one profile you picked, inside your plan and its limits.
  • Publishing a post, sending a reply and switching on an automation wait for your yes by default.
  • Each connection has limits: up to 60 requests a minute and 200 changes a day by default (20 a minute and 100 a day for the whole profile on Free).
  • Text from DMs and comments reaches the assistant marked as written by someone else, and it is told never to follow it.
  • Billing, your team, connected accounts and deleting contacts stay with you. An assistant cannot touch them.
  • End a connection at any time and its next request is refused.

Questions

DM automation an AI agent runs for you: it builds the automations, answers the inbox and schedules the posts through the tool's MCP server, and waits for your yes before anything goes out.

Yes, when the tool uses Meta's official API on an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator). Tools that log in with your cookies or password break Instagram's terms and put the account at risk.

No. A chatbot answers DMs. An agentic tool lets an AI agent run the tool itself: build the automations, switch them on, answer the inbox and schedule posts.

In Postkey, not by default. Sending a reply, publishing a post and switching on an automation wait for your yes, and you can change that per connection.

Postkey is built for it. Inrō, SuperProfile and Blotato also have MCP servers that build automations, by their own docs. The agent benchmark compares five jobs across them.

Postkey. One MCP connection with up to 52 tools builds and switches on DM automations, answers the inbox, schedules posts and reaches every account on your plan, with approvals built in.
