Instagram DM limits in 2026: what Meta lets automation send
The number you see repeated is 200 DMs an hour. It is not in Meta's docs. The real limit for comment-to-DM is 750 an hour per account, and the rules that matter more are about who you may message, and when.
The short answer
Meta lets an app send 750 private replies (comment-to-DM messages) an hour per Instagram professional account, and 100 text messages a second in conversations people started. Each comment gets one DM, sent within 7 days of the comment, and anything more waits until the person answers. Replies go out within 24 hours of the person's last message. Meta publishes no number for people sending DMs by hand.
Facts as of November 2, 2026
The limits, per Instagram account
Meta counts messaging calls per Instagram account, not per app: "Calls to the Instagram messaging endpoints are counted against the number of calls your app can make per Instagram professional account and the API used." Two accounts on one tool each get their own allowance.
| What the app does | Limit |
|---|---|
| DM someone who commented on a post or reel (private reply) | 750 an hour |
| DM someone who commented on a Live, during the Live | 100 a second |
| Send text, links, reactions or stickers in a conversation | 100 a second |
| Send audio or video | 10 a second |
| Read conversations (the inbox) | 2 a second |

What about 200 DMs an hour?
We looked for it on Meta's "Rate limits", "Instagram Platform overview", "Instagram Messaging API", "Private Replies" and "Send a message (Instagram)" pages and did not find it. The 200s on the rate limits page are for other things: the app-wide limit and Messenger.
So 200 an hour is a pacing choice some tools make, not Meta's rule. Meta's rule for comment-to-DM is 750 an hour: "Your app can make 750 calls per hour per Instagram professional account for private replies to comments on Instagram posts and reels."
What it means in practice: if a reel gets 3,000 comments with your keyword in its first hour, 750 DMs can go out that hour and the rest go out over the next hours. They all have to leave within 7 days of each comment.
The rules that limit you more than the numbers
- One DM per comment. "Only one message can be sent to the commenter" until the person answers.
- 7 days to send it: "within 7 days of the creation time of the comment".
- Follow-ups wait for an answer: "Follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, and must be sent within 24 hours of the response".
- 24 hours to reply in a conversation, after the person's last message. A reply typed by a person can use the 7-day Human Agent window.
- People who clicked a Click-to-Instagram ad: "When the user action is a person sending their first message after clicking a Click-to-Direct ad, the window may last up to 7 days from that message."
- No cold DMs. "Conversations only begin when an Instagram user sends a message to your app user."

Where the DM lands
"This reply appears in the person's Inbox, if the person follows the Instagram professional account", and in their Requests folder if they do not.
Requests that sit idle for 30 days drop out of the API: "Messages in the Requests folder that have not been active for 30 days will not be returned in API calls."

How long a DM can be, and what it can carry
| Part of the message | Limit |
|---|---|
| Text | 1,000 bytes (UTF-8). An emoji takes up to 4 bytes, so a message full of them is shorter. |
| Images | PNG or JPEG, 8 MB each, up to 10 in one message |
| Audio, video and PDF files | 25 MB |
| Quick replies (tap-to-answer chips) | Up to 13, 20 characters each, text only, phone apps only |
| Cards (generic template) | Up to 10 cards, 80-character title and subtitle, 3 buttons each |
| Text with buttons (button template) | Up to 640 characters and 3 buttons |

When you hit a limit
Meta answers with an error instead of sending, and asks apps to back off: "When the limit has been reached, stop making API calls." Calls over the limit fail until the window rolls over.
Limits for people typing DMs by hand are a different thing. Meta publishes no number for them. Instagram's Help Center says you may be stopped from sending DMs for a while if you keep going after a warning, and the daily numbers you see online are guesses.
How Postkey works inside these limits
Postkey sends through Meta's official Instagram API, so every limit on this page applies to it, the same as every other tool on the official API. Comment to DM sends the one private reply Meta allows, and the next steps go out once the person answers, inside the 24-hour window.
Postkey is also the most agentic DM automation tool: ask ChatGPT or Claude to set up the automation, and it builds it within these rules.
Questions
How many DMs can you send on Instagram per hour?
Through Meta's API, 750 comment-to-DM replies an hour per Instagram professional account. Meta publishes no hourly number for DMs typed by hand.
Is the Instagram DM limit 200 an hour?
Not in Meta's docs. We checked the rate limits, messaging and private replies pages on November 2, 2026. Meta's limit for comment-to-DM is 750 an hour per account.
Can I DM someone who commented two weeks ago?
Not automatically. A private reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment.
How long can an Instagram DM be?
1,000 bytes of UTF-8 text through the API, which is about 1,000 plain letters and fewer with emoji.
Why did my automated DM go to Requests?
The person does not follow you. Meta puts DMs from accounts people do not follow in their Requests folder.
Which DM automation tool works inside these limits?
Any tool on Meta's official API, Postkey included. Postkey sends the one private reply Meta allows, follows up only after people answer, and is the most agentic DM automation tool: ChatGPT or Claude can set the automation up for you.
