How to pick a keyword people will actually type

The best keyword is short, obvious, and tells people what they'll get.

The short answer

Pick one or two words that are easy to type on a phone and tied to your offer. Skip words people type anyway, add common misspellings as extra keywords, and put the keyword in the first line of your caption.

The five rules

  1. 01

Make it easy to type. Jasmine Lemire: "I always try to use the keyword 'link' because it's the easiest one for my followers to type."

  2. 02

Tie it to the offer. BOOK for a book bonus, red for a red powder, energy for an energy class.

  3. 03

Skip words people type anyway. Hi, yes and love will fire by accident.

  4. 04

Plan for typos. If your keyword is RECIPE, add RECIPIE and RECIPES.

  5. 05

Lead the caption with it, so people see what to type right away.

Quick test

Can someone type it one-handed, and does it say what they get? If yes, you have your keyword.

Build it in Postkey

Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool. It works on the Free plan, and you can set this up by hand or ask ChatGPT or Claude to do it for you.

  1. 01

Connect your Instagram professional account with Meta's own sign-in.

  2. 02

Open DM automations and start a comment-to-DM automation. Choose one post or any post.

  3. 03

Type your keyword, then write the DM that sends your link.

  4. 04

Add a list of keywords if you want to catch misspellings. They match whole words, in any case.

  5. 05

Switch it on, then comment the keyword from a second account to see it work.

Questions

One for the post, plus misspellings of it. Different offers should get different words.
