Is auto DM allowed on X (Twitter)? What X's rules say
X allows some automated DMs and rules out most. The line is whether the person asked to be messaged, and whether they can make it stop.
The short answer
X allows an automated DM only to someone who has "clearly indicated an intent on X to be contacted by you via Direct Message", and every automated DM needs an easy opt-out. Welcome DMs to new followers, bulk DMs and cold DMs are not allowed. The safe setup on X is narrow: DM only people whose comment answered a post that promised the DM, once, and stop the moment they say stop.

The one point: the person has to ask
X's Automation rules allow an automated DM to someone who has "clearly indicated an intent on X to be contacted by you via Direct Message". X's developer guidelines start with the same question: did the user explicitly request the interaction?
So the ask has to be in the post itself. "Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the link." is a clear request: the person who comments GUIDE answered it. "Link in DMs" or "DMs open" is not, because it never says you will message them. Following you is not a request either: X rules out automated welcome DMs to new followers.
X does not approve individual setups, and no tool can promise X will not act on an account. The narrow reading is the safe one: a clear ask in the post, one DM, and an opt-out that always works.

The opt-out is not optional
X's guidelines for automated accounts: "If a user says "stop," stop." They ask apps to detect common opt-out phrases. In practice every automated DM should end with one plain line, like "Reply STOP and I won't message you again.", and the app has to honour it for good, not just for that post.
Saying the message is automated helps too. X asks that an app's purpose and behaviour be clear to users.
X's DM limits
These are ceilings, not targets. X treats the same text sent again and again as spam, so a few clearly different wordings, spaced out, matter more than speed.
People who comment but do not follow you get the DM in their message requests, where X may file it under Other. Asking them to follow you in the post helps it get seen.
| Window | Per user | Per app |
|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 15 | None listed |
| 24 hours | 1,440 | 1,440 |
The per-app limit is shared by every account on that app, so a tool has to pace DMs well below it.

How Postkey does comment to DM on X
- The post has to ask. Postkey checks that one sentence holds both the keyword and a first-person promise of a DM, like "Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the link.", and refuses the automation otherwise.
- One DM per person per post, never a follow-up, and every DM ends with "Reply STOP and I won't message you again." STOP is honoured forever from that X account.
- At least 3 different DM wordings you write yourself, with {choices} and {{name}}, and no AI-written text. Up to 100 DMs a day per account, spaced apart.
- If someone's DMs are closed, they get one public reply instead. You also tick a separate DM consent for your X account.
- It comes with Create and up. Create includes 250 comment replies and DMs on X a month, Pro 1,000 and Advanced 2,500. The links in them are included. With public replies, the first reply Postkey leaves under each post uses one of the plan's X posts with a link. DMs never do. Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool, so an assistant can write the post that asks and set up the DM automation on it. Turning on comment DMs for your X account is yours to do once, in Postkey, and a DM automation an assistant sets up goes live only when you approve it.
Who should pick Postkey for this
People who already post on X and want one tool for the post, the comment keyword and the DM, plus DM automation on Instagram, Messenger and X and scheduling to 21 networks. If you need to DM people who never asked, no tool should do that for you on X.
Questions
Can you auto DM on Twitter?
Only people who asked. X allows an automated DM to someone who has "clearly indicated an intent on X to be contacted by you via Direct Message", with an easy opt-out. Cold DMs, bulk DMs and welcome DMs to new followers are not allowed.
Can I auto DM new followers on X?
No. X's developer guidelines say welcome DMs to new followers are "Not allowed as automated DMs", because a follow is not a request to be messaged.
Is comment to DM allowed on X?
When the post asks for it in words and the DM has an opt-out, it fits X's Automation rules: the person who comments has asked on X to be contacted by DM. X decides how its rules apply.
How many DMs can you send a day on X?
Through the API, 1,440 in 24 hours per user and 15 per 15 minutes, with 1,440 in 24 hours for the whole app.
Which tool does comment to DM on X?
Postkey, from Create: one DM to each person who comments your keyword on a post that says you will DM them, with a STOP line and no follow-ups.
