Why your DM never reached them: non-followers and message requests
People say your DM never came. Often it did, in a folder they never check.
The short answer
You can auto-DM someone who doesn't follow you if they comment on your post or DM you first. The message lands in their message requests, and Instagram may leave out link buttons. So tell them where to look, put the link in the text, and test from an account that doesn't follow you.

Five things to do
- 01
Remember they have to start it. You can't DM someone who never wrote or commented.
- 02
Expect message requests. New conversations from non-followers go to the Requests folder.
- 03
Tell them where to look. Say "Sent! Check your DMs or message requests." in your public reply.
- 04
Back up your button. Instagram may leave it out, so put the link in the message text too.
- 05
Test it like a stranger. Comment your keyword from an account that doesn't follow you.
Or ask for a follow first
Once they follow you, the DM reaches their main inbox. Postkey sends to everyone who comments by default, and you can limit it to followers or ask for a follow first.
Build it in Postkey
Postkey is the most agentic DM automation tool. It works on the Free plan, and you can set this up by hand or ask ChatGPT or Claude to do it for you.
- 01
Connect your Instagram professional account with Meta's own sign-in.
- 02
Open DM automations and start a comment-to-DM automation. Choose one post or any post.
- 03
Type your keyword, then write the DM that sends your link.
- 04
Keep a button on the opening DM. The tap lets you send the link and any follow-ups.
- 05
Switch it on, then comment the keyword from a second account to see it work.
